Clayton hotel - caring for the environment

Living Green

At Clayton Whites Hotel, we are fully committed to and excited by our contributions towards reducing the impact of our business on the environment.

We are currently engaged in a range of activities including the reduction of single-use plastics, the effective management of waste, the minimizing of consumption of gas and electricity to reduce our carbon footprint, and various community socially responsible projects.

With the support of our Central Office team, our hotel green team looks forward to having a very positive impact on the environment in the years ahead.

Energy

Electricity

All our electricity is purchased from 100% renewable sources. We converted to low-energy LED lighting throughout the hotel and reduced electricity usage by fitting motion sensor lighting on all our corridors and public areas.

Water

Replaced all the taps and introduced aerators in all public toilet taps, bedroom wash hand basins, and showers heads resulting in significant reductions in the amount of water used throughout the hotel. We have changed our linen policy notifications within our guest bedrooms to assist with water and energy consumption.

Natural Gas

We reduced our fossil fuel usage by changing over to Natural Gas which in turn reduces air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions compared to using goal or oil.

Electric Car Parking

Clayton Whites Hotel underground parking features two electric car charging stations available to our guests, perfect if you have an electric car.

This charging point is accessed via EasyGo. For your convenience we would recommend that you download the EasyGo app prior to your arrival and subscribe to either a prepay or pay as you go subscription.  The EasyGo app can be downloaded from the Apple store or Google play store.

Biodiversity

Save the Bees

We recycled the sugar used in our Christmas gingerbread village of houses which was constructed as a visual display in our main hotel lobby throughout the festive season to raise funds for one of our chosen charities – “Crumlin’s Children’s Hospital”. The sugar was dissolved into sugar syrup and used to nourish the winter-feeding honeybees.

Bird Feeders

We upcycled some damaged floorboards from our business centre lobby into bird feeders which have been positioned carefully around the courtyard of the hotel.

Eco Herb Garden

Old flower pots and planters were upcycled by being painted white with the name and picture of the herb on the front of each pot. The Green team also included information for guests’ tabs in each pot so guests know what each herb is and what it can be used for.

Waste

Segregation

We have introduced further waste segregation systems throughout the hotel including throughout our 160 bedrooms and back of house areas. Correct segregation of waste such as food provides fertiliser and can be converted to renewable energy.

Daily checks are carried out to ensure correct the bins have been segregated correctly.

Reuse Coffee Bean Grounds

Ideal for fertilising plants by providing additional nutrients and deterring pests.

Reduce Plastic Waste

All single-use toiletries have been replaced with a sustainable alternative.

Paper

Removed pads and pencils from guest bedrooms.

Community

Litter Pick-Up

The Green Team arranges monthly litter pick-ups around Wexford Town.

Charity

The hotel actively supports Crumlin’s Children’s Hospital annually by fundraising throughout the year with events such as spinathons, staff bake-offs, pumpkin carving, gingerbread village display, church gate collections, and our most fun event is our Crumlin Christmas Cracker where families come to see Santa and his friends. All proceeds raised at these events go to CMRF Ireland.

Community Awareness

We have partnered with Seal Rescue Ireland, the only seal rescue center in the Republic of Ireland that rescues and rehabilitates sick or injured seals from around the coastline of Ireland. By partnering with Seal Rescue Ireland we helped raise vital funds and create awareness for SRI’s mission which is to promote ocean conservation and sustainability through proactive education, community engagement, and research programs, in order to protect our marine environment and all life within.

The Future

We have established a strong Green Team Committee within Clayton Whites Hotel and, with guidance from Dalata Hotel Group, we undertake to identify environmental issues and collectively do our best to develop new initiatives to help minimise the impact tourism has on the environment.

Our plans include:

  • Undertake a small restoration project to help the local community
  • Collect coffee grinds to offer as fertiliser for plants at home
  • Introduce a herb garden in our courtyard

These are just a few examples but we still have much more to do!
