JOHNSTOWN CASTLE

The Irish Agricultural Museum and Johnstown Castle Gardens make a wonderful day out for all the family

Explore one of Ireland’s best kept secrets… enjoy a wonderful day out at The Irish Agricultural Museum and Johnstown Castle Gardens. Built by the Esmonde family who came to County Wexford in 1169, Johnstown Castle is just a 10 minute drive from Clayton Whites Hotel. The remarkable ornamental grounds and gardens surrounding the 19th century castle were designed by Daniel Robertson, renowned for the magnificent gardens of Powerscourt in Co. Wicklow. Today Teagasc, the Agricultural and Food Development Authority, owns Johnstown Castle and has a research facility on site.

The grounds contain over 200 varieties of trees and shrubs and are enhanced by two lakes which are home to a range of waterfowl. Catch a glimpse of the magnificent peacocks that strut around the grounds and display their finery. Wander through the superbly presented grounds along various pathways and catch a glimpse of the castle at times. The tranquil setting is a beautiful place to have a picnic in summer months while watching the shimmering waters of the lakes. Fill your lungs with fresh air and take part in the free 5km Park Run which happens every Saturday morning at 9.00am around the grounds and gardens of Johnstown Castle.

Housed in the former estate farm buildings, the onsite Irish Agricultural Museum showcases rural life in Ireland from the turn of the 18th century until the middle of the 20th century, as well as outlining the colourful history of Johnstown Castle and its estate. The museum offers lots to see, learn, do and enjoy for all ages including vintage machinery, recreated workshops of traditional trades, largest public collection of Irish country furniture and a Great Famine exhibition.

The aptly named Peacock Tea Room is open throughout the year for a relaxing beverage and delicious local food.
